Paternity fraud is referred to as an act of misleading a man into believing he is the biological father of a child. This is a global problem that represents a complex social issue. It transects various dimensions like legal, emotional, and psychological dimensions. With implications, whether small or great on affected families, children victims, and the society at large, recent research statistically provides unprecedented insights to this sensitive topic as the prevalence and impact of paternity fraud has gained international attention.

Prevalence of Paternity Fraud
Paternity fraud in recent years has become more common than many people realize. Studies carried out globally suggests that paternity fraud rates across different country regions and demographic groups vary considerably. These studies indicates that;

– In the United States, DNA tests done annually, shows that about 3%-4% of these tests reveals misattributed paternity.

The DNA testing industry has grown exponentially and dramatically increased detection rates over the years because it has played a crucial role in exposing fraudulent paternity. With an annual growth rate of 10.5%, over two million(2 million) paternity tests are carried out annually,worldwide.

Impacts of Paternity Fraud
As stated earlier, the impact of a fraudulence of this kind intersects different areas:
1. Impact on Emotional and Psychological Wellbeing
The emotional effect of this fraudulence is very profound. Affected men, after discovering the truth, often have feelings of betrayal, broken trust, and psychological challenges that have long term effects such as anxiety and depression. Research has shown that 75% of men experiencing paternity fraud reports go through severe emotional trauma.
Affected children, also, face significant consequences, that icludes identity crisis and difficult familial relationships. Studies shows that a substantial percentage of children affected by paternity fraudulence experience emotional distress, while many fathers report long-term mental health issues.

2. Economic/Financial Consequences
Paternity fraudulence also has its financial impact. It carries a heavy financial burden on it own that weights an individual down. Billions of dollars are paid for child support payments which are tied to cases of paternity fraud in the United States alone; men unknowingly pay an estimated amount of $1.5 billion annually in child support for children who are not biologically theirs. Also, about $5,000 to $50,000 can cost an individual for litigation expenses on legal challenges.

3. Legal Consequences
Legally, the disputes over custody, reimbursement, and emotional damages causes further, additional strain on affected individuals and families at large. Some countries, like France and South Africa, have acted out laws that addresses paternity fraud, resolving 50%-60% of contested cases in favor of the misled party.
